HEALTHY AGEING RESEARCH
The Velux Stiftung supports research that aims to maintain or increase the functional ability of older people. This includes basic as well as applied research in the fields of biology, medicine, psychology and neurosciences.
Life expectancy has increased dramatically in the industrialized countries. Unfortunately, age also represents one of the greatest risk factors for many diseases. We should therefore strive to keep the time period in which we are limited by disease or ailments short.
With this objective in mind, the term Healthy Ageing is well explained in the definition of the World Health Organization WHO:
Healthy Ageing is defined as the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age. A person’s intrinsic capacities and the interaction with his or her environment make up the functional ability.
In this definition, healthy does not equal disease-free. Many older individuals have well-controlled health conditions that only have a small influence on their functional ability and do not limit their well-being. Ageing means change in physiological as well as social and behavioural terms. The goal is therefore to enable people to be and do what they value, in a combination of each individual’s capacity and the environment. This includes the physical environment such as a person’s home as well as the societal environment
